Congratualtions to FR and its legacy. Thanks for sharing this interview about Joseph Juran, whom I greatly respect.

In Japan, I think there are 3 American figures in Manufacturing Quality who are spoken about with special reverence. They are W.E.Deming, Peter Drucker, and Jospeh Juran. These 3 individuals brought successful techniques and ideas from industry and universities and introduced them successfully to Japan at a time when they were most needed (though the same theories were much less successfully applied in USA). In my mind these 3 form a sort of trinity, perhaps comparable to the Intel "trinity" (Noyce,Moore,Grove) described in a recently published book about Intel history.

Drucker focused on the management of people, organizations, and knowledge. Deming focused on statistical process control and more generally on Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy for correcting the approach and motivations to achieve quality within organizations. Juran preached on the key principles such as Pareto (prioritization), Cost of poor quality, and quality by design (not by inspection). Lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma principles both may be said to have borrowed some philosophical aspects from Juran (e.g. focusing on factory output and efficient work processes, rather than machines and raw theoretical throughput; reducing waste due to poor quality, etc.).

Though Juran is undoubtably the least famous of the 3 names, Juran's philosophies live on through all manufacturing industries. His Quality Handbook is still regarded as a classic 'bible' (now in it's 6th revised edition). So important have Juran's ideas become that today they almost sound like clichés to us. But before Juran, these ideas were not known or practiced.

I think it is significant to recognize that both Drucker and Juran (though not Deming) were immigrants from Europe, as was Intel's Andy Grove. It is a good example of how the USA (and the world) has benefited from the diversity and drive to succeed that may be embodied by immigrant communities.

Steve Jobs highlights, in this interview on Juran, the importance of challenging the status quo and working optimistically to effect change. I think that is a part of the benefit of empowering diversity in an organization (including culture, gender, age, creed, etc.) . It is the attitude that we all have to try to embrace every day, though it is usually much easier to stay with what is known and appears safe.

I really like what Jobs say about Dr. Juran: One characteristic of great people I met is that they treat everyone the same President or Janitor. caring and straight forwardness towards every individual.
any question asked at the moment was the most important question.
Look in the eye exactly the same to anyone. The way he viewed people so optimistically that even the most foolish question was addressed with the greatest desire to transmit what he had learnt in his life.

Very important lesson I will teach my boys today. Thank You.

The video shows a really nice tribute to Joseph Juran by Steve Jobs. I had only seen written references to Juran before. Jobs, in his usual eloquent way, was able to breathe life into his description of Juran in much the same way that others have described Robert Noyce. Not just brain but also passion and heart. Makes me wish now that I could have met both Juran and Noyce.

I watched the video yesterday and it reminds me, as usual, that I have a lot to read about the greats in Quality, like Juran.

I particularly liked what Jobs said about not having been to his home and not having met his wife…and being able to tell a lot about someone that way. I’m in the middle of reading Blink and was just on the chapter of assessing people just by seeing their dorm rooms for 20 minutes vs. having lunch with them every week for a year.

At any rate, Jobs mentioned that one thing that he really like about Juran is that he treated everyone one the same, and the most important question was the one you were asking him right at that moment, no matter where you came from, your background etc. I wonder if Jobs himself took that advice himself or tried to emulate the behavior at all (from his biography it seems that he was still working on it throughout his life…but that’s just the stories in the book).


Great video for sharing the real value of quality in an organization. As Steve mentioned, it is about re engineering a process which gives you the desired output in the most efficient way. Congratulations on reaching this amazing milestone.
